In a single shot, Trembling Time depicts the moment of silence on the day commemorating those who have fallen in Israel's wars. Each year, throughout the country, sirens remind Israeli's to observe the 'Soldiers Memorial Day'. The camera is directed from a bridge toward traffic flowing below. It shows cars coming from a single direction on the multilane highway. It is dark outside, and the scenery is lit up only by the cars' headlights. In the beginning, all the cars drive along at various speeds. With the sounds of the sirens, however, the vehicles gradually slow down and eventually come to a complete standstill. Doors open, the passengers get out and pause beside their cars for a moment of silence in collective remembrance. Following the interruption, they immediately get back into their cars and resume their driving. In addition to the suggestive use of sound, Bartana employs technical alienation effects such as slow motion, repetition and cross-fading, so that the images- some moving faster, some moving slower - flow into one another in various layers. Trembling Time communicates the emotionally charged ritual of the statedecreed minute of silence as both visual and an aesthetic experience, while simultaneously formulating a distanced, critical reflection upon the collective behaviour pattern of a nation.
