DAVID MALJKOVIC

IN THE CORNER OF THE EYE

03 September – 09 October 2021

Annet Gelink Gallery proudly presents In the Corner of the Eye David Maljković‘s sixth solo exhibition at the gallery.

Throughout his practice, Maljković explores the possibilities of exhibition-making, closely paying attention to how comparable narratives can be rearranged to create new meaning. In the Corner of the Eye, Maljković proceeds in investigating the function of the gallery show. Subsisting as a heterogeneous ensemble, the works on view each have a central visual element - Colour Separation Guide and Gray Scale.

In the exhibition space, the colour scale stands as a channel of transformation as well as mediation. While connecting and creating interrelationships between the various motifs (images) the scale exists as the common denominator within the space. By means of it, the motifs undergo a metamorphosis resulting in their objectification. Similarly, a relational and dynamic conversation arises between the 2D works.

By juxtaposing a diverse range of works, Maljkovic envisages notions of transposition, assemblage, and processes of meaning-creation. The subtle network of relationships created between the exhibited works is visible and acts as a reminder of the process of intertextuality as well as an understanding of the broader context of change that has occurred throughout the artist’s practice. In the creating the exhibition, Maljkovic examines the politics of the gaze which marks as well as enables a multitude of relationships, and with them, establishes new values. In this occasion, the focus is put on the everyday routine, and the ritual aspects behind it are emphasized through the motiv.
