Skafte Kuhn

Recently graduated from the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe, Skafte Kuhn (1969) shows his graduation piece and other works in The Bakery. His graduation piece, entitled Morgen kommt heute und gestern wird folgen, is an installation of objects that evokes an uncanny feeling. A feeling that the world has turned topsy-turvy without being able to exactly indicate what differs from the way things normally are. Time seems frozen for a moment and it is unclear what will happen next.
Kuhn succeeds in making perceptible that time is an essential subject of his work without using film or video. Similar is his capacity to create a soundpiece without sound: Lauterschnellerhärter are small, rigged up letters of cardboard that scream for attention. The deliberate hand-made (often clumsy) character is a clear feature of Kuhn's work. He does not polish and thereby leaves the passage of time visible.
