PRESS RELEASE

JOSSE PYL

I Think and I Think I’ve Thought a Thought

March 16 – May 18, 2019

Opening March 16, 5 - 7 pm

Annet Gelink Gallery is proud to present the first presentation by Josse Pyl (1991, BE) in The Bakery.

A thought is formed in the stomach, breathes through the chest and neck, which shape its timbre, and then moves through the vocal cords to form its pitch, into the mouth, where the tongue and teeth give its final texture and push the word outside the body, into the air.

With his own spatial language, Josse Pyl examines the intuition that lies behind our perception of the world in order to show the machinery behind those signs and sounds that connect one person to another. Our understanding of the world is closely connected with the symbols and images that we create to form them, but silence and unspoken words also form our reality.

The works on view in the gallery’s project space reconsider the act of writing thoughts into the world and explores the ways we understand the world through the forms of its writing, just as the desire to find a form that expresses our conscious and subconscious thoughts.

Therefore, Josse Pyl’s devices, drawings and objects can be seen as characters or symbols that are part of a story that gradually unfolds in the exhibition space.

A physical grammar that forms a separate linguistic world, permeated by a dreamlike logic, making familiar forms of communication both tangible and alienating.

Josse Pyl (1991, BE) was an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam (NL), 2017-2018 and has completed a Master of Visual Arts (2014-2016) at Werkplaats Typografie (NL) and a Master (2013-2014) and Bachelor (2010-2013) of Visual Arts at KASK School of Arts, (BE).
