"Girl in the Underground, Tokyo, 1981. Van der Elsken traveld to Japan on many occasions during the 1980s for a book that would be published in 1988 under the title 'De Ontdekking van Japan' ('The Discovery of Japan'). As always, he is fascinated with the posture of people, with poses, with body language. The girl in the middle of the image exudes a certain superfemininity; the look in her eyes suggests self-awareness, a degree of curiosity, and defensiveness. The contrast between her finely focused appearance and the unfocused background is reminiscent of Van der Elsken's early photographs of solitary woman in Paris and Amsterdam." -Visser, Hripsime, " Ed van der Elsken 55". New York: Phaidon Press, 2002.
