Continuing her practice between real and imagined, Kersten built and decorated an attic as a set of her latest film, designing and silkscreening the wallpaper herself. On the day of the shooting, she let a group of moths inhabit the space.
Where I’m Calling From (2024) is the result of a complex, even living process. For one evening, moths inhabited this attic. The artist filmed their presence as an additional haunted experience. The yellow wallpaper is also inspired by the novella by English writer Charlotte Perkins The Yellow Wallpaper (1892) in which a woman, whose mental health is faltering, descends into psychosis by seeing imprisoned women in the wallpaper patterns who, like her, are trying to escape. Minne Kersten is thus haunted by this literary ghost, itself haunted by imaginary characters. At the heart of this process, one can feel the full weight of domestic oppression faced by women, who, once cut off from the world, eventually lose their sanity. - Mathilde Cassan for Mouvement Magazine
