Note / MvW: ‘One with the other, couples on the bridge.’
All girls are called Maria, and Lolluz and Giaduz must really be head
over heels in love with each other. Their names appear so often on
the Ponte Milvio over the Tiber that it reads like a love letter without end. The bridge is also filled with dates, hearts in all shapes and sizes, and other expressions of passion. They are faded and crumbling, just like love in real life. The diptych that consists of the films Ti Amo and Per Sempre is both a study of transience and a longing for something permanent.
The flat balustrades have been filmed with a handheld camera, just as casually as the scribblings. They are the front and back of a love letter, one in the sun, the other in the shade, the river of time flowing forth underneath them. Here, too, van Warmerdam shows a dialogue between opposite movements, reinforced by the sounds of Rome – passers-by, footsteps and trolley suitcases. Dana Linssen
‘I love you’ (Ti Amo) is passionate, ‘forever’ (Per Sempre), by contrast, calm. With stunning simplicity Marijke van Warmerdam knows how to create meaning in an everyday observation of the two banks of the river. Like a sculptor, she fashions these concrete elements into poetry.
The stone sculpture is softened by the soundtrack’s shouts and footsteps – they make the observations more humdrum and less monumental. Indeed, the silence in many of van Warmerdam’s early works would
have made these films about love too sentimental. Bart Rutten
(IN DUTCH) Alle meisjes heten Maria, en Lolluz en Giaduz moeten wel heel veel van elkaar houden. Zo vaak staan hun namen op de Ponte Milvio over de Tiber, die zich laat lezen als een eindeloze liefdesbrief. De brug staat verder vol met hartjes in alle soorten en maten, data en andere hartenkreten. Ze zijn verbleekt en verbrokkeld, net zoals liefdes
in het echte leven. Het tweeluik dat bestaat uit de films Ti amo en
Per sempre is zowel een studie van tijdelijkheid als van het verlangen naar iets dat blijft. De platte brugleuningen zijn losjes uit de hand gefilmd, net zo terloops als de schrijfsels. Het zijn de voor- en de achter- zijde van een minnebrief, de ene in de zon, de ander in de schaduw. Daaronder stroomt de rivier van de tijd. Ook hier toont Van Warmerdam een dialoog van tegengestelde bewegingen, versterkt door het Romeinse geluid van passanten, voetstappen en rolkoffertjes.

‘Ik hou van je’ (Ti amo) is onstuimig, ‘voor altijd’ (Per sempre) juist kalm. Verbluffend eenvoudig weet Marijke van Warmerdam betekenis te leggen in een alledaagse observatie van de twee kanten van de rivier. Als een beeldhouwer buigt ze deze concrete elementen om tot poëzie. De stenen sculptuur wordt verzacht door de voetstappen en kreten in de soundtrack. Het maakt de observatie alledaagser en minder monumentaal. Want de stilte uit veel van Van Warmerdams vroege werk zou deze films over de liefde te sentimenteel maken. Bart Rutten
