Lara Schnitger (1969, Haarlem, NL) pushes the expressive power of traditional crafts while playing with identity, social engagement, and femininity. She pairs technique like dying, quilting, weaving, and sewing with tough and rebellious postures and messaging. Where the tactility of the works is soft and inviting, the works’ graphic aesthetics lend a jarringly bold impact. Her work echoes historical feminist’s philosophies while directly engaging with politics. In so doing, Schnitger conveys an understanding of women’s role in society that confidently holds an enduring message as well as resonance.
