‘Forever changes’ is a work of 2011. The work is part of a reflection on a transatlantic journey that one boulder made. The stone crossed from the ancient deserts of California, in the South-West of the United States to Amsterdam. Gallaccio alienated the stone from its original environment and transformed it into an artwork. By doing this, the artist “froze” the course of a natural artifact – something that was bound to change forever –by placing it within an art context. Yet, this interruption could also be seen as yet another change that’s happening to the stone, in the same way stones have constantly been appropriated since the early days of mankind. The material used in ‘Forever changes’ is characteristic of Anya Gallaccio’s preference for natural materials: the bronze being an alloy of copper and tin. The bronze cast of the stone could be seen as a reflection of and on the actual stone. The work was previously exhibited at the gallery as part of Anya Gallaccio's solo show 'highway'.
