Note / MvW: ‘The weight of the past is disappearing thanks to the lightness of young people. It is not the eternal value that counts, but the game, the change, the desire for something new.’ Rome is a city of steps. Built layer upon layer. In The Next Step all those tectonic plates of history are set in motion. The film, with its digital interventions, is also a ‘next step’ for Marijke van Warmerdam herself. The image of Rome as an artefact, archaeological site and cradle of architecture that she has depicted now enters a ‘next level’ as a video game. Rome is a city of construction and demolition, of building blocks that are thrown around in space like pixels. It is this very game that is crucial in van Warmerdam’s work. She impinges on the situations she films, whether through sound or objects dancing on water, so that The Next Step is also a reflection on her entire Rome project. Dana Linssen In The Next Step, an appendix to the project, nothing has been left to chance. Digital media are used to defeat the weight of history. The illusionary power of traditional film falls into insignificance compared with what yet awaits us. In this film van Warmerdam questions the tenability of not only film but also herself as an artist. The entire Then, Now, and Then project, as exhibited in this stately home, can be considered a radical break with the framework of her own oeuvre. Bart Rutten
