Marijke van Warmerdam

Note / MvW: ‘The river ripples, speeds up, swirls and bubbles before finally, with suitcase and all, continuing its journey.’ The driving force of water is an important subject in this film. The camera explores the quay and almost falls into the water. The framing of the shot makes the perception abstract and increases the physical experience of the river. The film seems somewhat rigid and formal, until the camera comes across a lost ball bobbing about all alone in the river. The atmo- sphere of the work changes instantly. This ‘discovery’ is typical of the work of Marijke van Warmerdam, who likes to surprise the viewer with a perfect observation. But to what extent is it a discovery? If we look longer, we see several balls and objects dancing in the current. Van Warmerdam does not shy away from giving reality a helping hand. Bart Rutten This a homage to the waters of Rome and, for me, to a specific state of mind in the city. On many days, I would stop by a bridge or Lungotevere and observe how the water of the Tiber flows. Particularly, I would stop near the Isola Tiberina (Tiberina island), where the water of the river flows stronger and splashes. The camera in the film goes deep under the water’s surface. There is movement and undulating repetition. On this level of the city, there is just water, foam, light and reflection. Arnisa Zeqo (IN DUTCH) De stuwende kracht van water is in deze film een belangrijk motief. De camera tast de kade af en tuimelt bijna het water in. De kadrering van het shot maakt de waarneming abstract en vergroot de fysieke ervaring van de rivier. De film lijkt wat streng en formeel, totdat de camera op een verloren bal stuit, die eenzaam in de rivier dobbert. De sfeer van het werk verandert direct. Deze ‘vondst’ is typisch voor het werk van Marijke van Warmerdam, die de toeschouwer graag verrast met een rake observatie. Maar in hoeverre is het een vondst? Wie langer kijkt ziet meerdere ballen en objecten dansen in de stroom. Van Warmerdam deinst er niet voor terug de werkelijkheid een handje te helpen. Bart Rutten Dit is een ode aan de wateren van Rome en voor mij aan een specifieke geestesgesteldheid in de stad. Op veel dagen bleef ik staan bij een brug of op de Lungotevere en keek ik hoe het water van de Tiber stroomt. Ik bleef vooral vaak staan bij het Isola Tiberina (Tiberina-eiland) waar het water van de rivier een sterkere stroming heeft en opspat. De camera in de film daalt diep af onder het opper- vlak van het water. Er is beweging en golvende herhaling. Op dit niveau van de stad is er enkel weerspiegeling, water, schuim, licht en reflectie.
