Artworks, materials, and motifs are all elements that Steffani Jemison reuses from one exhibition to the next. As fragments incessantly modified and rearranged, they constitute a personal constellation. Scaffolding, omnipresent in the urban landscape, is one of her recurring sculptural motifs. Such pieces recall temporary construction work but also the "jungle gym" found in playgrounds – protective frames that allow risk-taking, setting the body in motion and training one's eye on new perceptions of space.
This sculpture explores the tensions between emancipation and constraint. Beyond the game of forms, Steffani Jemison examines power as it entraps, affecting bodies and limiting their vibrancy, sketching a poetics of impeded movement.
